Citrus County

Founded in 1887 and situated just west of Marion County, Citrus County offers residents a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle, but still a close proximity to major cities and locales. Many residents of Citrus County work in Marion, and have refuge from a busier city life, with restful locations and small, hometown-like communities. Almost 25% of Citrus County is water, with many lakes, estuaries, creeks, rivers and of course open access to the Gulf of Mexico. Citrus County is most famous for its migration of Manatees, and over 400 unique species of animals reside in Citrus County at any given time. Homosassa Spring Wildlife State Park is where visitors can get close to the animals on a floating observatory. Black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, American alligators, and river otters can also been seen in the park. The park is also home to the hippopotamus Lu, famously known for his performances in many movies for the past 40 years.

See below some of the communities within Citrus County:

Crystal River | Gulf of Mexico
Crystal River is at the heart of the Nature Coast of Florida. The city is situated around Kings Bay, which is spring-fed and so keeps a constant 72 °F (22 °C) temperature year round. A cluster of 50 springs designated as a first-magnitude system feeds Kings Bay. A first-magnitude system discharges 100 cubic feet or more of water per second, which equals about 64 million gallons of water per day. Because of this discharge amount, the Crystal River Springs group is the second largest springs group in Florida, the first being Spring Creek Springs in Wakulla County near Tallahassee. Kings Bay can be home to over 400 manatees during the winter when the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico cools, and is the only place in the United States where people can legally interact with them in their natural conditions.
